Habits in north less than green

Most Thessaloniki residents are neglecting their environment and their health, depending on cars for their daily commutes, avoiding recycling and relying on fatty foods, a study by prefectural authorities has shown.

Half of Thessaloniki residents hardly ever use public transport, according to the report, which showed that 31 percent rarely use buses and 21 percent never use them. The majority (88 percent) claimed to use only their car to travel to work, according to the survey, conducted by the prefecture’s environmental unit, which has said it will subsequently launch a green awareness campaign.

Efficient waste management is another neglected area, with one in three saying they never or hardly ever recycle their waste.

Residents of the northern city are equally dismissive when it comes to their own health, with nearly half claiming to eat high-fat, high-salt cold cuts every day.
