Would-be immigrants’ journey cut short

Stefanos Rapanis/ANA

A Palestinian immigrant awaits his fate yesterday after Port Authority officials at the Cretan port of Iraklion intercepted him and another 79 of his countrymen. The 80 would-be migrants had been left on a beach by a people-smuggling boat that managed to elude detection. The number of immigrants entering Greece illegally reached 112,364 last year, a 93 percent increase since 2002, Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos told a parliamentary debate on the issue yesterday.
