Greenpeace activists...

Yorgos Karahalis/Reuters

Greenpeace activists wearing top hats bearing the European Union flag feed a man with corn outside the European Commission’s office in Athens yesterday in a symbolic protest against an EC order for Greece to lift its ban on planting genetically modified (GMO) corn seeds developed by US biotech giant Monsanto. The environmental protection group is urging Greece to appeal to the European Court of Justice to defend its right not to approve GM products. Greece said in April that it would ban the MON810 seeds, despite the Commission’s decision to approve them. However, Athens has since been unable to find enough support among the 25 EU member states and Union rules allow the Commission to overturn the ban.
