Win they do, convince they don’t

Olympiakos and Panathinaikos scored narrow wins at the weekend to continue sharing the top spot of the soccer Super League, but once again failed to put on convincing performances.

A depleted Olympiakos took all three points from its visit to Peristeri, beating Atromitos 1-0 on Saturday through an 80th-minute goal by Spanish midfielder Oscar Gonzalez. The result was a relief for manager Zico who was missing eight of his top-pick players.

French star Djibril Cisse scored twice in the first 12 minutes to give Panathinaikos a 2-1 victory over visiting Panionios yesterday. The first came from a penalty for a handball by Akeem Omo Sulaimon, who also got his marching orders. Yet 10-man Panionios was often better than its host and set up a dramatic finish with Sito Riera’s second-half goal. Cisse has now moved to joint top of the scorers’ chart with six goals.

AEK needed a controversial penalty decision in the 84th minute to salvage a point (2-2) at Ergotelis, who missed a penalty of its own. The squad was later strongly criticized by AEK’s own fans at Iraklio airport last night.

Kavala continued its impressive run with a 3-0 win over lowly Panthrakikos, while Iraklis beat Asteras Tripolis 1-0 at home on Savvas Kofidis’s return to the host’s bench after the sacking of Oleg Protasov on Friday.

Elsewhere PAS Giannina drew 1-1 with Levadiakos, Larissa and Aris produced an entertaining 2-2 draw and PAOK moved to third with a late Vladan Ivic header that gave the Thessaloniki club a 1-0 win over Xanthi.

Panathinaikos and Olympiakos lead the table with 25 points, 10 more than PAOK. Aris and Kavala share fourth spot with 14 points, one ahead of Ergotelis. AEK is seventh with 12, followed by Asteras Tripolis and Panionios with 11, Larissa, Iraklis, PAS Giannina and Xanthi with 10. Atromitos (8), Levadiakos (8) and Panthrakikos (1) are in the relegation zone.
