Robber nabbed red-handed

A 23-year-old man, whose father is an official with the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) party, was arrested yesterday shortly after he allegedly took part in a bank robbery.

Giorgos Voutsis, whose father Nikos Voutsis is a member of SYRIZA’s political office, was found by police to be in possession of two handguns and a hand grenade used in the holdup of a National Bank branch in Gyzi, central Athens.

Police said they will examine the weapons to determine whether they had been used in other robberies.

A search of the suspect’s home turned up masks, gloves and metal bars – items often used in violent street demonstrations, police said.

Sources said the 23-year-old man had received a suspended prison sentence three years ago for taking part in clashes with riot police. Authorities are searching for a second man who allegedly took part with Voutsis in yesterday’s robbery, in which 23,000 euros was stolen.
