OTE telecom may cut the high-speed Internet access of some 100 tertiary education institutions after claiming that computers at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) are being used to update the Athens branch of the anti-capitalist news network Indymedia.

OTE said that the Greek Research and Technology Network (EDET), a public body, is in breach of the contract it has signed on behalf of state universities, which enables them to get Internet access at substantially reduced rates.

According to OTE the contract stipulates that broadband access be used solely for educational and research purposes and it has given EDET until tomorrow to ascertain whether NTUA terminals are being used to maintain the Indymedia Athens site before it cuts off Internet access to all the universities. EDET says it cannot be held responsible for how the Internet is used at the institutions.
