A new highway junction at Faliron, expected to drastically cut the journey from Piraeus and southern Athens to the airport and the city’s northern outskirts, will be delivered to the public at the beginning of July, the government pledged yesterday.

The Neo Faliron junction, which will link the national road from Athens to Lamia with the coastal highway by means of the built-over Kifissos River, is one of the biggest works of its kind in Greece.

“It is a very difficult project, perhaps the most difficult junction ever built in the country,” Public Works Minister Giorgos Souflias said yesterday during a visit to the work site. He said most of the work would be ready in a month’s time.

According to traffic police estimates, the new road will allow motorists to drive from Faliron to Metamorphosis in northern Athens — where the national road meets the new Attiki Odos highway — in 15 minutes. Some 200,000 cars are expected to use the new junction every day.

Together with the Kifissos highway project, construction teams widened the riverbed to prevent flooding.
