Passenger ferry hits a reef off Kythera

A ferry carrying 295 passengers yesterday struck a reef off the island of Kythera, south of the Peloponnese, sustaining damage but causing no injuries.

The collision, the third such incident in the Aegean within a month, occurred as the Myrtidiotissa was trying to dock, though it was unclear what caused the accident. The impact opened two holes in the ship’s hull and damaged a propeller. Efforts were under way yesterday afternoon to clean up the fuel leaking from two gashes, which were 7 meters and 10 meters long. The Express Pegasus ferry will be serving the route between Neapoli and Kythera until the Myrtidiotissa is repaired.

Yesterday’s incident followed a collision off Andros earlier this week, when an approaching vessel hit a moored ferry, and another off Oinousses, in the eastern Aegean, at the end of June, when a ferry hit a rock.
