Poor promised helping hand

The government will implement measures in September to alleviate the tribulations of low income citizens due to the global economic crisis, Economy and Finance Minister Giorgos Alogoskoufis said yesterday following talks at the Maximos Mansion with Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis.

“There is no doubt that we are going through a difficult period for the global economy but the government will do its best to ensure that this will have the smallest possible impact on Greece,” Alogoskoufis said.

The minister said a series of measures would be taken in September to support “the social groups hit hardest by the global economic crisis.” He did not explain what these initiatives would be.

Karamanlis too stressed that low income Greeks were the government’s priority. “High prices are not a purely economic issue but also a deeply social one,” he said. The premier said that his government’s strategy reflected European Union policy which foresees the implementation of measures to boost the incomes of poorer citizens.
