A policeman cleans up yesterday after a road accident near Epidaurus, in the northeastern Peloponnese, between a car and a motorbike resulted in one person dead. In a separate incident in Crete on Sunday a 50-year-old woman was killed when the car she was driving entered the opposite traffic lane and hit an oncoming vehicle.

As an estimated 1.7 million Athenians returned from a 3-day holiday weekend yesterday, an Athens court ruled a planned strike by baggage screeners at Greece’s two main airports illegal, authorities said.

The planned 24-hour strike — to protest management changes — was scheduled to start at 11 p. m. at Athens International Airport and Thessaloniki Airport, leaving only emergency staff on duty.

The exact impact of the court ruling was not clear as Athens News Agency reported that the staff will proceed with the 24-hour walkout but said that they would push forward the starting time to 7 a. m. today.

The protest follows strikes on Saturday and Friday by workers calling for job guarantees after management passed to a different private company.

Meanwhile, road traffic yesterday afternoon backed up for kilometers on the Athens-Lamia national highway near the port of Aghios Constantinos due to construction work and also at Kakia Skala, west of Athens.
