EARTHQUAKE

5.8 Richter tremor in southern Greece

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale shook southern Greece on Saturday, the Athens Geodynamic Institute reported, but there were no reports of injuries or damage. The tremor, which struck at 3.43 p.m., had an epicenter 45 kilometers southwest of the island of Kythera.

Baby for sale

Three people were arrested in Thessaloniki after attempting to sell a 40-day-old infant, police said yesterday. A lawyer, a 56-year old Greek woman and a female foreign national have been accused of trying to sell the baby. Police said they believe the suspects are part of an international racket.

Drowning victim

A 38-year-old man who had been reported missing on Thursday in Arta, western Greece, was found dead yesterday in his car, which had plunged into a nearby irrigation channel. Police believe that the victim, Spyridon Repoulios, drowned before he could escape from the vehicle.

Motorcycle thieves

Police said yesterday they arrested a 23-year-old man, a foreign national, in Halkidiki, northern Greece and are searching for two more men believed to be operating a stolen motorcycle ring. Authorities said that the three men were spotted transporting stolen motorcycles in the area of Polygiros by truck. Two of the men, aged 22 and 25, escaped arrest while police caught the the third suspect.
