With Attica prefecture demolition teams poised to take action this week against illegally erected seaside buildings, the regional authority for Eastern Attica has taken the government to Greece’s highest administrative court for allegedly enabling a state-owned hotel to set up illegal extensions on the southern coast.

In a suit at the Council of State made public on Saturday, the Eastern Attica authority — within whose jurisdiction most of the area’s illegal coastal buildings lie — accused the Finance Ministry’s state real estate department of illegally redefining the coastal margins at Lagonissi, some 42 kilometers south of Athens. This enabled the managers of the Grand Resort Lagonissi state-owned resort complex to legitimately set up structures on a coastal strip where they would not normally be allowed to build.

Attica Prefecture, which also clashed with the state real estate department during a controversial demolition bid three kilometers north of Lagonissi last month, is set to take new action this week against illegal coastal structures.
