CYPRUS RALLY

Frenchman Loeb wins

Norway’s Henning Solberg and his co-driver Ceto Menkerud leave a cloud of dust in their wake as they speed past spectators in their Ford Focus WRC 2004 on the last day of the Cyprus rally in the Troodos mountains of Kellaki yesterday. Frenchman Sebastian Loeb won the rally.

Russian memorial

Greece yesterday paid homage to 200 Russians who died helping Greek anti-Nazi resistance fighters in World War II by unveiling a memorial near the Athenian district of Kallithea. The inauguration of the statue — depicting a fallen Russian soldier being wept over by his mother — was conducted in the presence of Russian Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Isakov by the mayor of Kallithea, Costas Askounis.

Prince departs

Britain’s Prince Charles yesterday left Greece following a three-day visit to the all-male monastic community of Mount Athos in the country’s north. Prince Charles has made annual visits to Mount Athos since 2000.

Sick conscripts

A group of 30 conscripts was being treated for symptoms of gastroenteritis in a military hospital in the Peloponnesian town of Sparta on Saturday, the army said. Food poisoning is suspected, rather than a virus. None of the conscripts were in serious condition.
