Parliament yesterday made public the assets and funds-source declarations tabled two years ago by the country's MPs, MEPs and party financial officials, promising to make more updated figures available by mid-April.

The declarations, known as pothen esches statements, are intended to ensure officials cannot get away with undeclared income, as the source of the funds used in every major purchase involving real estate, vehicles and other high-value assets must be mentioned. But the data published yesterday are for 2002, and were tabled in 2003. No comparative figures were made public for previous years, and the declarations for 2003 - submitted last year - are still unavailable. Parliament officials promised to make the 2001 and 2003 data available in two months' time.

The 2002 figures imply that several MPs were economical with information on their real estate deals, with assets in prime areas such as Kifissia, Myconos and Syros listed as having been bought for far below their market value.
