Those held in Greek jails and detention centers “run a considerable risk of being mistreated,” according to a report by the Council of Europe’s anti-torture committee that notes several instances of alleged police brutality against detainees and highlights immigrants as particularly vulnerable.

According to the committee, which published its report yesterday, detainees at police stations around the country claim to have been beaten by officers wielding clubs. One migrant detained at a police station in Thessaloniki claimed to have been threatened with a hot poker by officers. Another detainee claimed to have been forced to undress before being beaten and humiliated by officers.

Responding to the report, the Foreign Ministry contested the findings and stressed that all allegations of improper behavior by police officers are “thoroughly investigated.”
