The Ano Liosia landfill, where the entire 5,500 tons of rubbish produced in Athens every day is dumped, is expected to return to full operation today or tomorrow following Wednesday’s talks between the local mayor and Environment, Town Planning and Public Works Minister Vasso Papandreou.

Earlier this week, Ano Liosia Mayor Nikos Papadimas decided to strictly abide by the agreements regulating the landfill and allow only 500 tons in every day, in a bid to pressure the government into fulfilling its pledge to designate new landfills in other parts of Attica that will lessen the burden on Ano Liosia. As a result, the streets of Athens are piling high with uncollected trash.

During Wednesday’s meeting, Papandreou promised to introduce legislation this month that will define where the new landfills will be built. Papadimas told journalists he was “seriously” regarding her positions. The Ano Liosia municipal council will meet today to discuss the matter, but is widely expected to revoke its previous decision.
