An immigrant raises...

KOSTAS TSIRONIS/REUTERS

An immigrant raises his fist during a protest rally in central Athens to mark May Day. A placard in the background reads ‘Legalization for all immigrants.’ The presence of migrants at this year’s rally was larger than usual, organizers said. Thousands joined rallies in the capital and in Thessaloniki to protest tax increases and large-scale redundancies. The Athens rallies were largely peaceful, though self-styled anarchists caused some problems in Thessaloniki. In Athens, workers’ strikes hampered public transport while dozens of flights and ferry departures were canceled.
