A pigeon drinks water...

THANASSIS STAVRAKIS/AP

A pigeon drinks water from a fountain in central Athens yesterday as the temperature in the city reached 39 degrees Celsius (102F) — its highest yet for the year. The City of Athens laid on 25 indoor air-conditioned areas to offer respite from the heat. It is expected to remain extremely hot and sunny today, before storms begin hitting the country’s north in the afternoon. The temperature is expected to drop noticeably tomorrow all around Greece.
