Vehicles smashed in rampage

A dispute between fans of rival soccer teams in eastern Athens led to a group of some 30 youths rampaging through the streets of Zografou and damaging 41 cars, police said yesterday.

The youths, wearing motorcycle crash helmets and wielding pieces of wood, smashed the windows of an Ilisiakos supporters’ club and also threw rocks at parked cars.

Nobody was injured and no arrests were made as the youths ran into the nearby grounds of the university halls of residence that are off-limits to police.

Officers are linking the raid to an incident in nearby Kaisariani early on Saturday morning, when about 20 youths damaged three cars and the entrance to an apartment block.

The youths threw rocks and a Molotov cocktail at the building and smashed the windows of cars.

No arrests or injuries were reported.

Police said that the incidents were caused by fans of teams in Zografou and Kaisariani but did not give more details about the dispute between the supporters.
