ZAMMIT HONORED Hospital renames unit after Australian killed on vacation
A ceremony was held yesterday to rename an intensive care unit at the Henry Dunant Hospital in Athens after Doujon Zammit, the 20-year-old Australian tourist who died there last month after being beaten while on holiday on Myconos. Zammit’s father, Oliver, decided to donate his son’s organs after being told that the youngster was brain dead. The organs were successfully transplanted, saving the lives of four people. Four men are being held in connection with the incident that led to Zammit’s death. LAND REGISTER Long hours for some offices Offices processing land register applications yesterday extended their hours to cope with the hundreds of thousands of property owners expected to besiege them until the October 31 deadline. The six busiest offices – those at Syntagma Square, Kypseli and Mavili Square as well as the Piraeus office and two offices in Thessaloniki – are now open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday. The Syntagma office is also open from 8.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. on Saturdays. The country’s remaining 72 land register offices are now open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Boat sinks A pleasure boat that had set sail from Spetses to Kalamaki on Sunday morning sank in the afternoon after a fire broke out on board, the Merchant Marine Ministry said yesterday, adding that the five passengers and six crew on board had been evacuated safely from the vessel. The 30-meter Mana was passing the southeast coast of Poros when the fire broke out in the vessel’s engine for reasons that were unclear. The blaze quickly swept through the boat which subsequently sank. Migrants intercepted A group of 34 illegal immigrants who had attempted to reach Agathonisi in an inflatable boat from neighboring Turkey were being detained on the island yesterday, Port Authority officials said. Meanwhile, in the northwestern port of Igoumenitsa, authorities were questioning five suspected smugglers after finding a total of 53 would-be migrants hidden in their vehicles. They were arrested while waiting to board a ferry to Italy. Center rumble Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis has hit out at critics who “simply emphasize the problem without proposing possible measures” following a large-scale clash between immigrants in central Athens on Friday night that left 11 people injured and dozens in police custody. Kaklamanis insisted that he has repeatedly raised the issues of illegal immigration and the level of crime in the city center. “I had approached the Interior Ministry, calling for the introduction of tough measures (immediate expulsion of narcotics dealers and people smugglers) and we have requested a meeting with the political and administrative leadership of the Greek Police to discuss the issue,” he said in a statement. Arsonists arrested A 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of starting a fire that burned 55 hectares of forest in Thesprotia, northwestern Greece, two weeks ago. Another man has been taken into custody for allegedly starting a fire that destroyed some 20 hectares of farmland in Grevena, northern Greece on Saturday.
