Soccer season kicks off

Archrivals Panathinaikos and Olympiakos drew 0-0 in the opening round of the Greek Super League in a fast and toughly contested encounter that failed to yield goals but produced eight yellow cards and a red for Olympiakos defender Paraskevas Antzas in injury time.

Though just one round into the new season, changes appear to be on the way. Reports yesterday contended that PAOK, a 1-0 loser at Xanthi on Saturday, was set to oust coach Giorgos Para-

schos. Fernando Santos, the former AEK coach who recently parted ways with Portuguese club Benfica, was cited as a possible replacement.

Iraklis board member Achilleas Beos, a controversial figure in Greek soccer with a trouble-filled past at Athens club Panionios, resigned yesterday from his new post at Thessaloniki team Iraklis, a 1-0 loser at home against Ergotelis.

In other games yesterday, it was: OFI-Apollon Kalamaria, 3-2; Asteras Tripolis-Larissa, 0-1; Atromitos Peristeri-Levadiakos, 2-1. In Saturday’s other game, host Aris and Panionios played a scoreless draw.
