An amateur firefighter...

An amateur firefighter douses the embers of a large blaze that broke out in Gytheion, south of Sparta in the Peloponnese, yesterday afternoon. Earlier in the day, three water-dropping aircraft were dispatched to aid the efforts of firefighters on the ground who struggled to approach the blaze due to the lack of road access in the area. The absence of strong winds, that had fanned dozens of blazes across the country earlier in the week, helped firefighters contain the Gytheion blaze before it could spread to residential areas. Over the past week around 200 forest fires have broken out in different parts of the country.
