Two weeks before Athens hosts the Paralympics, Greek police chiefs have issued officers with a special manual advising them how to treat disabled people.

In a country where disabled facilities are at a minimum, Greek police officers could be ignorant of disabled people’s needs so their superiors have given them a guide on how they should behave during the September 17-28 Paralympics.

Tips include: avoiding the use of emotionally charged words such as “tragic” or “victim,” describing disabled people based on their job title and not their disability, asking a disabled person if they need help before offering it and addressing a disabled person directly, not through their helper. The pamphlet also includes advice on how to treat disabled athletes but the pointer which might confuse policemen most is “act normally.”
