Father and son suspects segregated from other detainees in prison

The governor of a prison in Nafplion holding a 37-year-old farmer and his 73-year-old father – both charged in connection with the murder of five hunters in Agrinion – said on Saturday that the pair are being detained in a separate area from other inmates. Dionysis Foukas and his father Lysimachos are being held in a separate detention area, as they requested, and also exercise and eat their meals away from other inmates, prison governor Sotirios Mitakis said.

MIGRANTS INTERCEPTED

Police arrest two traffickers

Police on Saturday arrested 48 illegal immigrants and their two suspected smugglers following an inspection at Soufli, near the Turkish border. A group of 38 immigrants, due to travel to Athens aboard a truck, were detained at about 2 a.m. on Saturday after police set up a road block. Two suspected smugglers and another 10 illegal immigrants were detained at around the same time at Thessaloniki’s intercity bus station.

Detainee death

A 28-year-old detainee died at a police station in the central district of Acropolis on Friday night, it was revealed on Saturday. The unnamed man had been taken in for an identity check, according to police. A medical examiner attributed the death to natural causes but there was no official autopsy ruling available yesterday.

Postman robbed

A postman carrying 30,000 euros in cash was robbed on Saturday after he stopped his vehicle to change a flat tire in Kozani, northern Greece, authorities said on Saturday. The postman had placed a bag containing the cash on the floor of the car in front of the passenger seat, when the item was stolen. The stolen money was supposed to be distributed to pension recipients, police added.

Drug arrests

Thessaloniki police said on Saturday that they had arrested 49 suspects on drug-related charges during the month of November. Police found in their possession 3.5 kilos of heroin, three kilos of cocaine, 70 kilos of hash and 120 ecstasy pills.

Missing man

A 75-year-old man has been reported missing on the eastern Aegean island of Samos after he went picking mushrooms, police said yesterday. Rescue teams, including an army unit, were searching for the man until late yesterday but found no trace of him.
