Ruling PASOK and conservative New Democracy officials continued to trade charges yesterday over PASOK's claim that brochures aimed at compromising its leader George Papandreou with conservative churchgoing voters were being disseminated by the opposition party. Athens Chief Prosecutor Dimitris Papangelopoulos ordered an urgent investigation both into PASOK's claims as well as suspicions that intelligence agents were involved. PASOK's chief electoral strategist, Theodoros Pangalos, filed suit against persons unknown for the brochures that claim Papandreou is an atheist, a blasphemer and soft on narcotics. Papangelopoulos instructed prosecutor Eleni Sotiropoulou to see whether any laws had been broken, to trace the senders and find out how PASOK learned of the matter. PASOK on Wednesday presented photographs of ND employees preparing to send brown envelopes from a post office in the central district of Koukaki, saying these included brochures. ND replied that the contents of the envelopes in the photographs were not revealed. It claimed a frame up, or «provocation,» which PASOK, in turn, denied. ND yesterday turned down PASOK's challenge for officials to go to the central dispatch center to open such packages, saying: «We will not take part in the provocation... We have absolute faith in the judiciary.»
