Landmarks in Greek-FYROM relations

FYROM Prime Minister Hari Kostov and Foreign Minister Ilinka Mitreva applaud President Branko Crvenkovski (l) at a Skopje press conference yesterday.

1991: FYROM votes for independence from Yugoslavia.

1992: Greece demands that FYROM should stop using the name Macedonia.

1993: FYROM enters the United Nations under the name “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.”

1994: Greece imposes economic blockade, demanding FYROM change its flag and constitution in which the country is named “Republic of Macedonia.”

1995: Under UN auspices, Greece and FYROM sign an accord on ending sanctions in exchange for a new flag and changed constitution.

1997: Greece’s foreign minister visits Skopje, the first Greek official to do so since 1991.
