Commutes in Athens demand traffic plan
A study made public yesterday predicted that there would soon be 2 million more commutes made in Athens every day, prompting Transport Minister Michalis Liapis to call for traffic regulations in the city to change. Liapis was speaking after the report, compiled by the General Confederation of Greek Labor (GSEE), was unveiled. He said that a new way to control traffic in central Athens was needed to replace the current odd/even registration plate system. He also plans to extend bus lanes and make sure they are properly policed. The GSEE study found that there are currently 8 million journeys a day in Athens. This number is set to rise to 10 million by 2011. Some 45 percent of short trips consist of people commuting to and from work. GSEE said 41 percent of people’s daily journeys were conducted by public transport.
