Citizens speak out against Church land deals

GIORGOS FOTIADIS/ANA

Hundreds of supporters of the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) joined a rally yesterday in Ouranoupolis, the town situated next to the monastic community of Mount Athos, to protest real estate deals made by one of the community’s 20 monasteries. The banner reads ‘We say NO to holy business.’ Representatives of the Vatopedi Monastery, implicated in the land exchanges, have said they will take their case to the European Court of Justice.
