PASOK can go it alone, says leader

PASOK leader George Papandreou believes his party can win enough votes in the next general election to form a government on his own and has discounted the possibility of forming a coalition with New Democracy.

«PASOK is fighting to form a government on its own and to give the country a strong and stable government of change,» he told Sunday's Kathimerini.

«The possibility of the so-called 'grand coalition' bears no relation to today's reality in Greek politics,» he said on the idea of the two big parties working together.

He left the door open to some form of cooperation with the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), which he accused of suffering from «vertigo» following its good opinion poll results. «I hope… they will soon meet us on the road to the widest possible democratic and progressive cooperation,» he said. «There is one prerequisite: the political will so we can understand each other.»

Also, Papandreou backed the government's NATO veto over the Macedonia name issue but warned that there was still a long way to go.
