Driving instructors pleaded yesterday with the government to change the way that new drivers are tested because the current system is open to corruption and does not ensure safety on Greek roads.

In a news conference, the union representing the instructors called for wholesale changes to the system. «The entire system of teaching and testing has to fundamentally change if we are to stop mourning deaths from accidents,» said Giorgos Lekkas, the head of the Association of Professional Driving Instructors.

The instructors suggested that driving theory books should be updated, the method of testing students should be shored up to prevent bribery and that instructors should have licenses for every type of vehicle, not just cars. They also said that the minimum age of 21 for someone to become a driving instructor was too young.
