The Athens Water Supply and Sewage Company (EYDAP) said yesterday that it has agreed with a joint venture to start transporting partly treated sewage from the islet of Psyttaleia, near Piraeus, to Germany in a deal that will cost almost 10 million euros.

The 9.6-million-euro agreement will involve the transport of about 75,000 tons of sludge to Germany by boat, where it will be solidified in a procedure that is expected to start in late April and last for 55 days.

An agreement with joint venture Lobbe Tzilalis and Environchem Hellas will be signed in the next few days, EYDAP added.

The transfer of the sludge is expected to help provide some relief to the city’s waste management woes as Ano Liosia residents refuse to allow the dumping of the sludge in their area’s landfill, citing health concerns.
