Athenian motorists have responded uncharacteristically meekly to the new Olympic driving restrictions in force in the capital over the past week, traffic police said on Saturday.

A police statement thanked Athenians for their compliance with the measures, under which one lane on many of the capital’s main thoroughfares has been set aside for the exclusive use of Olympics-related traffic between 6.30 a.m. and midnight. The fine for entering one of the Olympic lanes — which are marked by an orange line and orange Olympic circles but no warning signs — is a hefty 156 euros.

Police said 421 non-accredited vehicles had been caught in the Olympic lanes since the restrictions started on August 1. Furthermore, 21 accredited vehicles had been stopped for speeding, while three were involved in accidents — in one of which a pedestrian was injured.
