PAPAMICHAIL DEAD

Actor was best-known for film parts

Stage-and-screen actor Dimitris Papamichail died of a heart attack yesterday at his holiday home near the northeastern Peloponnesian town of Kranidi. Born in 1934, Papamichail appeared in dozens of Greek films in the 1950s, ’60s and early ’70s, and was married for a period to actress Aliki Vouyiouklaki, with whom he co-starred in several productions.

Airport gun

A young Greek mechanical engineer was arrested yesterday morning at Athens airport after security staff found a miniature gun disguised as a pen concealed amid his luggage. The 24-year-old, whose name was not made public, was to have boarded a plane for the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos. The gun was loaded with a .22-millimeter round.

Papandreou out

Opposition leader George Papandreou, 52, was discharged from the Attikon Hospital in Haidari, western Athens, on Saturday after being hospitalized with pneumonia on Monday. Papandreou, a former foreign minister who leads the PASOK party his late father, Andreas Papandreou, founded in 1974, is expected to fully resume his duties by midweek.

Road deaths

Three people were killed when a Lamia-bound car crashed into an oncoming long-distance bus early yesterday just outside the seaside town of Kammena Vourla in central Greece. The victims were identified as Andreas Papadopoulos, 64, Theodora Pothitou, 52, and bus passenger Anastassios Siviglou, 57. Eight other bus passengers were slightly hurt.
