Inspections of food imports at border points and production units across the country have led to the seizure of hundreds of tons of produce unfit for consumption, the Agricultural Development and Food Ministry said yesterday.

Border checks led to 888 tons of animal products and 1,287 tons of agricultural goods being seized last year, while 746 tons of animal products and 960 tons of agricultural goods have been seized so far this year. The hauls included large quantities of frozen seafood from Asia and Africa.

Inspections of production facilities so far this year have led to 740 tons of bad food being seized, including fish and lemons from Argentina, potatoes from Syria and coffee from Vietnam.

But Hellenic Food Authority President Yiannis Vlemmas said the level of food safety in Greece is “7 percent above the EU average.”
