Mentally ill mother kept family penned in

Authorities said yesterday they are treating two adults, a brother and sister, after their mentally ill mother forced them to live in squalid conditions in their village home, alongside the family’s livestock.

Authorities in Fokida, central Greece, said the brother and sister, aged 20 and 28, had completely neglected themselves but did not suffer from any health problems.

Ambulance workers only realized one of the pair was female when the mother called out to her by name, a police source said.

Authorities visited the family home in Marathia, in the Fokida region, after receiving reports from concerned neighbors.

The three of them had recently moved to the village from Athens after the mother separated from her husband.
