A column of tractors rolls homeward...

ANA

A column of tractors rolls homeward on the national road from Athens to Thessaloniki yesterday, following Saturday’s decision by Thessalian farmers to call off a two-week protest campaign during which national roads were blocked by tractors on several occasions. Meeting under the shadow of flagging support, as groups of tractor-borne farmers slipped away to their home villages and fields, Thessaly’s farmers also decided to organize a rally with tractors in Athens later this month. The details will be finalized on Wednesday. Communist union leaders blamed conservative unionists for undermining the campaign, which was chiefly in pursuit of higher crop subsidies. Opposition New Democracy-affiliated union leader Thanassis Nassikas denied this.
