Greeks are far from happy with the conservative government, just over a year after its election, according to a new poll published yesterday. The survey by VPRC pollsters, conducted on behalf of Skai radio, also found that the overwhelming majority of respondents want a chance to vote on the new European Constitution in a referendum, as opposed to letting the matter be decided by Parliament.

Only 44 percent of respondents said the country had benefited from the change in government, while 36 percent had the opposite view. Some 35 percent expressed confidence in the government, 18 percent said they preferred the main opposition PASOK party and 32 percent said they would rather neither party was in power.

Furthermore, 51 percent said the government did not seem to have fulfilled its electoral promises.

On the EU Constitution, 71 percent urged a referendum, but 45 percent said that, if given the chance, they would vote for the constitution. Some 18 percent said they would vote against. The government has ruled out a referendum.
