A train derailed near the city of Larissa, central Greece, hurting 28 people early on Saturday. Authorities said initial indications show that human error is responsible for the accident. The two drivers were being questioned over the weekend.

Authorities are blaming human error for a train derailment that took place on Saturday, injuring 28 people, including three children.

The Hellenic Railways Organization (OSE) said an intercity train derailed shortly after midnight about 340 kilometers north of the capital on the way to Thessaloniki, near the city of Larissa.

It said the causes of the derailment were being investigated and that initial indications point to possible human error.

The station master failed to change the points after a previous train had passed through, causing five carriages of the passenger train to jump the tracks. He fled the scene and was being being sought by authorities.

The injured passengers were taken to a nearby hospital and most were treated and released but five of the injured remained in the hospital by early afternoon on Saturday for further observation.

Another woman also remained in a more serious condition with multiple fractures.
