Expert warns of risks linked to 3G phones

Third-generation (3G) cell phones are more exposed to viruses than their less technologically advanced predecessors, as users are subject to a higher risk of having their personal data stolen, an expert said yesterday.

“The new generation of phones involves new dangers and less protection,” said Giorgos Pangalos, a professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

“Mobile phones using the latest technology are small electronic computers. Because they have a limited volume, weight and price, they cannot have safety mechanisms (firewalls) included,” he added. According to a recent survey, about 13 percent of mobile phone users in Greece have a 3G appliance.

“New mobile phones can be subject to attacks from viruses... with attackers being able to take information from users on banking transactions,” said Pangalos.
