Fan assaults match official

A Super League soccer match in Athens was suspended on Saturday night after a fan ran onto the pitch and attacked the assistant referee, who was taken to the hospital wearing a neck brace.

There were only two minutes left in the game between struggling Ionikos and Iraklis with the score at 2-2 when the referee stopped the match.

Home fans were angry at several decisions by the assistant referee, Giorgos Kotoros, and after a clash between players on the field a supporter jumped out of the stands and wrestled Kotoros to the ground before riot police arrested him. Doctors said the match official suffered minor head and neck injuries.

Another Ionikos fan was arrested for hurling plastic seats at officers. Both men, aged 33 and 19, were charged with breaking the recently passed sports law.
