STUDENT ATTACKER

Woman in Thessaloniki stabbed 15 times by man living in her building

A 22-year-old woman was in a critical condition last night after a 34-year-old student from Jordan who lives in the same apartment building in Thessaloniki stabbed her repeatedly. The suspect allegedly attacked the woman, aged 22, by striking her with a knife 15 times. The cause of the attack was not disclosed. Authorities said they arrested the suspect, who is a student at Aristotle University, shortly after the incident and have filed criminal charges against him for attempted murder.

SMUGGLER ARRESTED

Iranian national caught in Xanthi

A 30-year-old Iranian national was arrested in Xanthi, northern Greece, on Saturday as he was allegedly transporting four illegal immigrants in his car, police said. The suspect is believed to have picked up the illegal immigrants, all from Afghanistan, from an unknown point on the Greek-Turkish border and was taking them to Athens in exchange for a 2,000-euro fee from each.

Abusive caller

A 41-year-old man was called to testify before a public prosecutor in Piraeus accused of making hundreds of thousands of phone calls to abuse police, authorities said on Saturday. The suspect, who has been treated for psychiatric problems in the past, is believed to have made 310,000 calls in the last 10 months from four different mobile phones.

Home robberies

A 78-year-old woman was beaten and robbed in her western Athens home in Peristeri, police said on Saturday. The victim told police that a man broke into her home while she was sleeping, beat her with a door handle and then made off with 200 euros. Separately, thieves entered an apartment in Nea Ionia, northern Athens, while the two residents were sleeping and stole their mobile phones and car.

Kypseli fires

A motorbike was destroyed by fire in Kypseli, central Athens, early Saturday after the dumpster it was parked next to was set on fire, police said. Shortly after, at about 4.30 a.m., a second dumpster in Kypseli was set alight, resulting in flames reaching two nearby parked cars being damaged.
