Soccer fans riot on ferry

AEK soccer fans caused about 150,000 euros in damage to a ferry that was transporting them back to Athens yesterday from Wednesday’s cup final in which their team lost to rival Olympiakos, authorities said.

About 700 fans on board the Ierapetra reached the port of Rafina after watching their team lose 3-0 in Iraklion, Crete. Authorities said that about 50 fans caused damage to the bar and lounge in the ferry that had been chartered by the club for its fans.

Six supporters have been detained and were being questioned by port authorities. Two people were injured in the incident. A crew member was hit by a bottle while the second person, a coast guard on shore, was hit by a flare fired by a fan on the vessel.

AEK fans were reported to be angry that they were not given free food and drink.
