Robberies and break-ins are on the rise again in Greece after a short period in which their numbers declined, according to police statistics. The number of robberies rose by 14.8 percent last year and burglaries by 5.8 percent, the first time in two years an increase had been observed. Police attribute the initial decline to more frequent policing and the introduction of foot patrols. They say last year’s reversal of the trend indicates a need for more policing, including plans to introduce the practice of having “neighborhood officers.”

Other crimes declined, however. Last year there were fewer murders than in any year over the past 12 years, while the number of cases solved more than doubled. Most of these were cases from previous years.

Break-ins are more frequent in summer when people are on vacation and police advise the installation of security doors and windows, alarms and timers for lights.
