The son of a former conservative member of Parliament was killed in a shootout shortly after midnight yesterday on coastal Poseidonos Avenue, one of the busiest points of the capital at that hour. Police are investigating the incident but initial suspicions are that this was a settling of accounts by narcotics smuggling gangs.

Initial reports said that two gangs of Albanians were involved in a shootout at 0.45 yesterday when two men were involved in an argument with at least one other person, who then fired at them and fled. Police found one young man dead and another critically injured. The injured man, who had three bullet wounds, was identified as Albanian national Nikola Arapi, 24. The dead man, who was shot in the neck, was identified only later yesterday as Akritas Savvouras, the 23-year-old son of veterinary surgeon and former New Democracy party MP Ippocratis Savvouras.
