Local residents stand...

NIKOLAS GIAKOUMIDIS/AP

Local residents stand beside a statue of Alexander the Great in central Thessaloniki yesterday after one of the three shields placed next to the ancient Greek conqueror was stolen. The Municipality of Thessaloniki said that it had ordered an immediate search for the shield but investigations failed to bear fruit late yesterday. The City Council has also called on residents to help with any information they can offer by contacting the municipality or police. Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos said that if the shield is not found then the city will arrange for the stolen one to be replaced.
