WINTER SALES

From today until end of February

Store sales begin today and will continue until the end of February. Price tags are to display euro and cent amounts separately (e.g. 1 euro 23 cents, instead of 1.23 euros) as of January 20 when the practice of displaying prices in decimals is to be abolished. This is intended to deliver the message that cents are not to be sniffed at.

Hang-glider crash

Two hang-gliding enthusiasts were being treated for fractures and bruises in an Athens hospital on Saturday after their motorized hang glider crashed in the vicinity of Akraifnio near Thebes just a few minutes after taking flight, when strong winds blew it off course.

Crew rescued

The seven crew members of a Korean-flagged cargo ship, which foundered in rough seas off the west coast of Lesvos, were airlifted to safety by two Super Puma helicopters on Saturday night. The two Syrians, two Lebanese and three Romanians were unharmed. The Khadijeh was about 36 kilometers (22 miles) off the island’s west coast when a displacement of its cargo — timber — caused the vessel to list dangerously.

North Korea

The Foreign Ministry, officially representing Greece as European Union president, late on Friday called on North Korea to reverse its decision to withdraw from a global nuclear non-proliferation treaty. The move sets “a most regrettable precedent,” a ministry statement said, urging North Korea to comply with its international commitments on curbing the spread of nuclear arms “in a visible and verifiable manner.”
