Bourse is source of mistrust

Nearly nine in 10 Greeks do not have confidence in the Athens bourse, according to the results of a poll released yesterday, while the majority also said they are not interested in the local equity market.

According to a TNSicap poll commissioned by Kathimerini, 47 percent of those questioned said the Athens bourse has not undergone the required cleanup necessary to improve its credibility.

Investors are still smarting from the market’s four-year slide after a rally by the benchmark general index to dizzying heights in 1999.

A recent jump toward five-year highs has also failed to stir the interest of smaller investors.

About 15 percent said they no longer trust the market, though they once did.

Six in 10 questioned said they don’t care about the market’s course while men over the age of 50 were most tuned in to stocks.

The poll surveyed 300 people in Athens on Wednesday and Thursday between the ages of 25-65.
