A truck drove into a pedestrian bridge on a main Athenian road yesterday, demolishing the steel structure, injuring two workers and creating hours of traffic delays.

The driver, whose name was not made public, flattened the half-completed bridge on Petrou Ralli Avenue in Piraeus at around 5.20 a.m. when he tried to drive the truck under it. His vehicle was 4.5 meters high, while the bridge had a maximum clearance of 4 meters, Public Works Ministry sources said, adding that the driver ignored warning signs.

Two men working on the construction of the bridge were injured and taken to hospital with minor injuries. A prosecutor ordered the arrest of the driver and the bridge’s chief constructor. The flow of traffic resumed at around 1 p.m., after a crane lifted the demolished bridge off the road.

Also, a 700-kilo concrete pipe fell off a truck on Poseidonos Ave. in Hellenikon at 11.15 a.m. but nobody was hurt.
