Attitudes to marriage appear to be changing in Greece, according to the results of a poll of single men and women made public yesterday, which suggested that six in 10 Greeks do not consider getting hitched to be absolutely necessary.

In a country where remaining single into your 30s was frowned upon until fairly recently, the approach to marriage seems to have changed substantially.

Seven in 10 respondents said they would stay with their partner even if he or she did not want to get married. The poll, conducted by Kappa Research, also found that some 40 percent of respondents do not have a positive view of marriage as an institution.

Romance, however, still seems to be alive, as 65 percent of the 1,001 people questioned said they would marry for love rather than for any other reason.
