An Italian and a Dutch man were arrested after 15 kilograms (more than 30 pounds) of cannabis were seized at Larnaca airport, police said on Saturday.

The 24-year-old Dutchman and his 34-year-old Italian companion were arrested at the airport on Friday evening when customs and drug squad officers saw them acting suspiciously.

The two arrived on a flight from Brussels, said police who have not revealed the names of the suspects.

When officials stopped the 24-year-old to search his case, he reportedly made a run for it and was chased by police who eventually caught him after a struggle.

A search of the Dutchman’s suitcase uncovered 15 packages of cannabis, weighing one kilo each, vacuum packed and covered in coffee beans to throw sniffer dogs off the scent. (AFP)
